Unscientific Temper of Modi/RSS

Unscientific Temper of Modi/RSS

This is a guest blog by Satyendra.
Extracts taken from Article 51A (h) of the Indian Constitution:
“Fundamental duties: It shall be the duty of every citizen of India
to develop the scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform”.
Modi government has been systematically eroding the Constitution & promoting the RSS agenda of ‘Manu’ thoughts by heavy attack on premier educational institutions, fund cuts in basic research and replacing it with courses in religious tourism, training ‘pandits’ and ‘vaastu shastra’.
. The statement of Minister of State for Human Resource Development (HRD), denouncing Darwin’s “Theory of Evolution”, illustrates the essence of the disrespect for scientific knowledge by Modi government.

Samples of Illogical Statements

  • In January 2018, Satypal Singh, HRD Minister of State claimed that Darwin’s evolution theory is scientifically wrong as “Nobody, including our ancestors, in writing or orally, have said they saw an ape turning into a man”. Further, he claimed that this theory should be removed from schools and colleges.
  • In January 2017, Rajasthan education minister, while speaking at a session at Hingonia Cow Rehabilitation Centre on the “Scientific importance” of the cow and its dung, claimed that “Cows exhale Oxygen”.
  • In 2015, Prime Minister Modi at 102nd edition of the Indian Science Congress dabbled more heavily on “Mythical aeroplanes” and cosmetic surgery of Lord Ganesha’s elephant head.
  • On April 17, the Chief Minister (CM) of Tripura, Biplab Kumar Deb said, “This is the country where the episodes of the Mahabharat war were narrated to Dhritarashtra by Sanjay. This means technology was there, internet was there, satellite was there…”

Promotion of Anti-Intellectualism

The murders of academic scholars and a rash of political appointments at universities have thrown Indian academia into an uproar against the conservative government. On the intensifying climate of religious intolerance and political interference in academic affairs several prominent artists, academicians and scientists have registered dissent against the government.
In February 2015, Amartya Sen, decided to step down as chancellor of Nalanda University in Bihar due to growing government intervention in academic decisions. Modi and his uneducated supporters genuinely believe that he understands economics better than Sen. Please remember his “hard-work better than Harvard” statement displaying the arrogance of the stupid!
The decision of denunciation of JRF fellowships and government’s plan to allocate the amounts towards cow research is laughable yet worrisome. Recently Harsh Vardhan, country’s Science and Technology Minister has announced to set up a committee to select projects that would validate the properties of “Panchagavya” – a mixture of cow dung, cow urine, curd, ghee and milk. It is expected that these projects would receive aid from various government ministries as well, even as India’s spending on science has remained stagnant at a woeful 0.6% of GDP.

Moving from Democracy towards Hindu Religious Dictatorship

Since I could not paraphrase what scientist P M Bhargava, who returned his Padma Bhushan  said, I quote him:
“The government is the biggest culprit against Article 51 A (h) by going against scientific temper. They are intolerant.
Among all the governments till date, this government is least committed to scientific temper. Other governments have also not been committed to scientific temper, but not to the extent of this government. If the prime minister believes in such things, it is terribly wrong. One does not expect the prime minister of India to believe in such nonsense (of plastic surgery in ancient India)”.

Why are Modi/RSS Anti-Intellectual and Anti-Scientific Temper?

The basis of Modi’s rule is based on divisive politics of caste, religion, mythological beliefs of ‘Ram-mandir’ , ‘Ram-setu’ and so on. Scientific knowledge is a danger to Modi/RSS remaining in power that is why a movie like “PK” of Amir Khan which showed equality of humanity and the reality of romance between a Hindu girl and a Muslim man & ridiculed a religious leader (rightly), was considered a threat and they wanted it banned.
