How to improve vocabulary? – By Col. Nehru

When I read some editorials in “The Indian Express”, particularly by people like Pratap Bhanu Mehta, I do not understand the meaning of certain words. There is a need for me to learn their meaning to comprehend what is being written and moreover to add these words to my vocabulary. I have explained my methodology for the same below.

Word: Federation

Meanings:

  • relating to a central government, not a state or local government
  • Having or relating to a system of government in which several states form a unity but remain independent in internal affairs.
  • Differences between federation and confederation:

Sentences:

  • In a federal system, power is divided between the central government and its member states, allowing the latter a degree of self-governance.
  • The US currently holds the distinction of being the oldest continuing federation, and is seen as a role model of this political system.
  • After great deliberations, the foundations of the Indian Federation were laid, as envisaged under the Constitution Act of 1935 and its structure was erected after the Canadian pattern.
  • The constituent units of the Indian Federation have no right to secede from it.
  • India is a federation with a strong centre.

Word: Sceptic

Meanings:

Sentences:

  • I am sceptic about the efficacy of the medicine being promoted by Ramdev as a cure for Covid-19.
  • The Indian farmers are sceptic about the new farm laws brought by the government.
  • A rationalist will often look at ancient beliefs with skepticism.

 

Word: Opportunist

Meanings:

Sentences:

  • Maradona had scored a famous opportunistic goal against England in a World Cup match.
  • Bringing in the new farm laws was an opportunistic move by the Indian government.
  • Creation of PM CARES fund was an opportunistic move by the Indian government.
  • Opportunists focus more on the ends rather than the means to achieve them.

 

Word: Propitious

Meanings:

 

Sentences:

  • The batsman made a propitious start.
  • The recent farm laws enacted by the India government are being promoted as being propitious.
  • The old veteran did not show enthusiasm for the propitious idea given by the young worker.
  • The mother was relieved to get the propitious news of her son’s recovery.

 

Word: Gregarious

Meanings:

 

Sentences:

  • The gregarious birds flock together.
  • The gregarious commander was loved by his juniors.
  • Having a gregarious disposition, the teacher detested isolation.
  • Being gregarious, he made friends quickly in the new country.
