When my SC Course ended, I was posted to 23 Punjab, but before moving, I spent a brief day with 20 Punjab, deployed in the Kandi-Budhal areas of J&K for Counter-Terrorism operations. Life in such a difficult area was a tough transition, and leaving 20 Punjab, the unit where I had spent 16 years of my career, marked a significant change. From my commissioning in Dec 1982, as a 2Lt, to my time as a Capt and Major, this battalion was where I grew.
As I moved on to 23 Punjab, I wasn’t alone—Kaul went to 17 Punjab, and Bhawani was entrusted with commanding 20 Punjab. It was a proud moment for the battalion, with two COs being exported to different regiments, a true testament to the strength of 20 Punjab.
Despite the short time available, 20 Punjab arranged my dining-out and a farewell that will remain etched in my memory. The camaraderie of 20 Punjab, and the culture of mutual respect and support in the Indian Army, especially the Infantry, is unmatched. This bond of brotherhood is what makes us proud Infantrymen.
I will always be a proud Infantryman, and 20 Punjab will forever hold a special place in my heart.
